Afyon Kalesi tarihi ve efsaneleriyle ünlü

Afyonkarahisar city's symbol, Afyon Castle, is surrounded by many legends and stories that indicate ancient times. This natural rock formation, located in the center of the city, is known for its strategic location and magnificent view.


There is no definitive information about when and by whom the castle was built, but it is believed that the structure dates back to the Hittite period in the 1350s BCE. In later periods, it was used by the Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans, and various innovations were made.


The 600-step staircase leading to the castle is known to belong to the Byzantine period. However, the walls and towers that you encounter when you reach the top of the castle belong to the Seljuk period.


Legends:


Afyon Castle is famous for its legends as much as its history. One of the most well-known legends is related to a dragon living at the foot of the castle. According to the legend, this dragon demands a young girl every day, and if this request is not met, it threatens to burn the city down. Finally, a young man manages to kill the dragon and saves the city from the threat. This heroic act caused Afyon to be known as the "City of Heroism."


Another legend is related to the 600-step staircase leading up to the castle. According to this legend, whoever can count the stairs and reach the same result will have a wish come true. However, the number of stairs always changes, so no one can reach the same result.


Whoever goes up to Afyon Castle will not leave Afyon for 7 years.


With these and many other legends, Afyon Castle offers visitors both a historical and mystical experience.
